MIT Looking to Boost Incandescents

The issue of which is the best form of lighting may not be resolved after all. The world is gradually shifting to LEDs. However, Science Alert reports that The Massachusetts Institute of Technology aims to give industry at least an option in its choice of lighting.

The research is aimed at changing the way in which incandescent bulbs work. The research centers on the fact that about 95 percent of the energy used to heat the filament to the point that it emits visible light is wasted. The goal is to capture that energy and enable the bulb to in essence power itself.

There also is innovation in window design. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has developed early designs for “superwindows” that consist of three panes, two low-E coatings and krypton gas fill. The windows, the story at the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy says, insulate better than a wall.
