Another school district has discovered that it can save significantly on energy prices through building upgrades and new energy management systems. The Springfield Local School District in Akron, Ohio, recently announced the start of an energy efficiency project that is projected to save more than $82,000 on annual utility and operational costs.

The $775,000 project calls for upgrades to the district’s interior and exterior lighting, including LED retrofits in the stadium restrooms. District boilers and boiler controls as well as the kitchen equipment will gain more energy efficient systems. Project partner Energy Optimizers, USA, an energy efficiency and energy savings company based in Tipp City, Ohio, that specializes in projects will provide energy management and monitoring service for three years.

The school district will reduce its energy use and cut utility bills without cost to local taxpayers, according to superintendent Chuck Sincere. The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission’s House Bill 264 energy conservation program is funding the project. Energy Optimizers guarantees the energy savings, and each year the commission and the district will receive reports verifying those savings.

Over time, the cost savings should allow the project to be paid off in 13 years, according to Energy Optimizers. Work on the project, which includes Springfield High School, Schrop Intermediate as well as Spring Hill and Young Elementary Schools, will begin in August.

Springfield Local School District joins other school districts across the country that are finding savings with energy efficient upgrades. An energy-management project for schools in Berkeley County, West Virginia, produced a net 78% reduction in energy use in the year since it was first launched. That particular project also netted $701,000 more than the savings that were initially guaranteed.
